"The evaluation of morphologic changes in experimental and disease states and, in particular, of correlations between morphology and function, has been hampered by the widespread misconception that complex morphologic changes cannot be adequately quantitated. It is true that rigorous morphometric techniques cannot be readily applied to the assessment of many morphologic abnormalities. On the other hand, there is considerable variation in severity of most morphologic changes and not to attempt quantitation is to prematurely admit defeat and completely eliminate the possibility of detecting morphologic-functional correlations if such correlations exist."

- J.K. Boitnott & K. Solez, 1984
